2025 Bursary & Jim Mitchell Award Winner

Assembling, installing or disassembling non-residential, prefabricated metal structures in Alberta is a designated trade and there are specific activities within this trade that require a journeyperson certificate.

As defined by Alberta’s OHS legislation and enacted by the Designated Trades and Restricted Activities Regulation, it may be the obligation of employers, supervisors, contractors, prime contractors and owners to ensure that any person engaging in prefabricated metal structure construction on their building site is a certified Ironworker Metal Building Systems Erector (MBSE) journeyperson or a registered MBSE apprentice working under the supervision of a certified MBSE journeyperson.

Metal Building Product Installation Training Subsidy for AMBA Members

AMBA members are eligible to receive up to $500 reimbursement towards in-person Metal Building Product Installation training.

  • Example of eligible training: Manufacturers’ and Suppliers’ seminars/courses, additional installation courses provided by educators

  • Does not include MBSE certification (other AMBA bursaries and awards are available)

  • Available to AMBA Members and AMBA member employees

  • Maximum $500 annual subsidy per AMBA member company

  • Reimbursement of training will be applied towards 2026 AMBA membership dues

  • Must provide Certificate of Completion and invoice

  • Training must be provided by third party and pre-approved by AMBA

  • Available for all courses completed by December 31, 2025

You want to be an ironworker. You want to fabricate, construct and join scaffolding, structural steel buildings, ornamental ironwork and pre-cast structures. You want to specialize in metalwork and are comfortable working at heights. But you need to learn more and choose from 3 specialized branches of the ironworker trade, which include ironworker – metal building systems erector, ironworker – reinforcing or ironworker – structural/ornamental. You want to learn how to erect and install scaffolding, construction cranes, derricks and other hoisting equipment, including assembling rigging (cables, pulleys, hooks) to move heavy equipment and materials.
