AMBA Newsletter: Summer 2022

SUMMER 2022 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Executive Director
It’s hard to think of a time in the last 50 years that compares to what we are currently going through! We have a major war in Europe, struggled with 2 years of a global pandemic and are now experiencing the worst round of inflation in a long time!

Despite all that, there is an economic rebound underway. Having just returned from a trip to Europe, people are traveling again. There is a huge pent-up demand for tourism, evident by passport delays and airlines struggling to handle the increasing volume of travellers.

Message from the Chair
I would like to thank everyone that came out to the 2022 AMBA Annual General Meeting on May 13 and the Golf Tournament on June 16. Your continuous support of our association encourages the successful growth of the metal building industry across our province.

Special thanks to our AGM guest speakers, Nicole Mahoney, NAIT Ironworker Chair, and Matthew Nasby, COR Manager at Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Education and Safety play such an important role in the construction of metal buildings and we very much appreciate the contributions that NAIT and ACSA provide to our industry.

INDUSTRY NEWS
State of the Industry: Summer 2022
It’s turning out to be another very unpredictable year. While inflation is skyrocketing with rates many have never seen before, Alberta is reaping the benefits of shocking energy prices with an estimated $3.9B budgetary surplus – far exceeding what was forecasted. Our province is set to lead the country in economic growth: 5.5% forecasted for 2022.
Worried about construction cost inflation? These 7 strategies will put you back in control
Ask project owners what keeps them up at night, and they’re likely to talk about construction cost inflation. They have a good reason to feel anxious.

Between August 2020 and August 2021, the cost of material inputs for nonresidential construction rose by more than 20% (Figure 1).
