AMBA Newsletter: Fall 2020

AMBA Fall 2020 Update
Fall 2020 Newsletter
Message from the Chairman of the Board
I hope everyone is doing well in this ongoing pandemic. We all need to keep ourselves, our families, and employees/coworkers safe so that we come out of this no worse for wear.

We have a new “Project Profile” section on our website, which features projects from our membership. It is there to feature your latest and greatest project and provide more exposure to engineered metal buildings. This is a perfect way to show case your firm and your ability to perform in our difficult market.

Executive Director Report: Fall 2020
Greetings everyone! We are living in unprecedented times. The world has shifted dramatically in both our professional and personal lives. Never in modern times have we had to deal with a fast-spreading, worldwide deadly virus. As someone who is in a high-risk category, numerous precautions are required. The reduction in our personal social contacts has been difficult. By nature, humans are social beings and we now find ourselves restricting ourselves to close family and very few friends.
Roger Geisinger, Executive Director, AMBA
MEMBER MATTERS
I was recently reading through a marketing report about why people join Professional and Trade Associations. The report started off with an article that included a dictionary definition of what an association is. In simple terms, it is “A Group Of People Organized For a Joint Purpose”.
WHAT'S NEW
Custom engineered snow retention systems are designed to suit specific climatic conditions, snow loadings and roof panel assemblies for metal roofs.
Snow retention systems are necessary in some climates to prevent roof top avalanches which could pose a significant safety risk, damage roof and gutter materials and cause property damage – well worth the investment.

Metl-Span’s BW Universal and BW Stretch systems provide superior air, water, thermal and vapor protection in an all-in-one barrier wall component. Our BW Universal System can be horizontally installed with nearly any type of exterior rainscreen system. Our BW Stretch System can be vertically installed and span up to 6 feet on center. This unique insulated metal wall panel system introduces new standards in cost savings, design integrity and sustainability.

New Standard in Lifting

When it comes to overhead cranes, our CXT crane has long been the industry standard. With the Konecranes S-series crane, we’re changing the game again, and setting the new benchmark. Never-before-seen features like the tilted drum, offset reeving, synthetic rope and the girder sliding connection, it’s a bold new approach in lifting. These design updates make lifting more precise and powerful, and significantly cut down the wear and tear.
PROJECT PROFILES
Retail Store
Butler Builder®, Melewka Structures & Design, thought outside the pre-engineered box, and between their architect and consulting engineer they provided a budget sensitive solution to a Dollarama retail store. Not only did this building deliver high on curb appeal, it also met a tight building schedule and stringent new national energy code requirements.

For more information on this building, contact Melewka Structures & Design.
Multi-Purpose Recreational Facility
While maintaining a tight schedule and being sensitive to the overall project budget, Scott Builders worked with Butler Manufacturing and Stantec Engineering to deliver this attractive and functional 78,000 sf multi-purpose Exhibition Hall in 11 months! A feat only possible using a complete engineered steel building solution. This Project ended up one month ahead of overall schedule and on budget!

Fast track your next construction project with an engineered steel building solution!

Public Works
In collaboration with Bennett Architect Inc., Clark Builders provided the City of St. Alberta with a 23,300 sf pre-engineered clear spanning structure with a lean-to building. Clark Builders worked with City representatives to ensure a high level of safety on an active public works yard site.

The City of St. Albert recognized the important role that the Alberta Metal Building Association (AMBA) plays in supporting qualified Metal Building System Erectors and their tender documents specified that contractors bidding on this project were required to be active AMBA members.

INDUSTRY NEWS
In the past decade, Alberta has experienced three deep recessions. With the prolonged oil price slump and persistent unemployment Alberta’s economy was already struggling; COVID-19 has stalled economic recovery further. Many Alberta businesses do not have the cash flow to weather this crisis and government hand-outs may not be enough to provide financial stability.
Pre-engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB) must be erected by certified Ironworkers or Metal Building System Erectors (MBSE) in the Province of Alberta.

When it comes to providing proper training and certification for the installation of PEMB, Alberta is leading the way. Improved quality, efficient construction, and enhanced safety are the leading reasons why this certification is mandatory.
Here are quick links to some of the tools to help you navigate your business through COVID-19.
