AMBA Fall 2022 Update
FALL 2022 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Executive Director
It is hard to imagine a comparable time in our past that is similar to what we are living with today. Covid, Ukraine war, rampant inflation, divisive politics and climate events have created a high degree of uncertainty across the globe. Closer to home, two of our bigger issues are inflation and labour shortages. Surging oil prices have filled provincial coffers but have also contributed to the high rate of inflation. While the provincial government has temporarily cut gas prices at the pump, our Federal government has increased the carbon tax to further fuel inflation!

MBSE APPRENTICES NEEDED!!!

Alberta is in urgent need of apprentice MBSE Ironworkers. Every erector and contractor that I have talked to are all short staffed and are having a lot of difficulty attracting new employees into the trade. The metal building erector shortage is compounded by aging journeymen and erector companies retiring.
MEMBER MATTERS
Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Update
The Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act came into force on July 20, 2022, replacing the Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) Act. The AIT Board was decommissioned and the Alberta Board of Skilled Trades (ABST) was established. Raymond Massey was appointed as the new chair of the ABST. Ray has a long history of supporting apprenticeship education and guiding apprenticeship and trade policy in Alberta. AMBA congratulates and supports Ray in his new role.
Key Considerations When Specifying a Retrofit Metal Roof Over an Existing Metal Roof
Retrofitting an older metal roof is a fast, easy and customer-friendly undertaking. There is minimal disruption to ongoing operations, the updated building code requirements are easily complied with and retrofitting is the ideal time to make the new roof more energy efficient.

State of the Industry: October 2022
Since the discovery of oil in Alberta, the province has been struggling through bust and boom economic cycles, but this last boom has been very different: complicated by rampant inflation, a global pandemic, climate change and a war in Europe.
Alberta is calling, Metal Building Erectors..
Enjoy working outdoors, using your construction skills, working at heights, reading blueprints and seeing the reward of your work in every building you complete. Alberta is the only province in Canada providing training and Journeyman certificates for the Metal Building System Erector trade.
