AMBA Newsletter: Spring 2021

AMBA Spring 2021 Update
SPRING 2021 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Chairman of the Board
Once again, our province and the country, is under siege from the dreaded virus attacking the world. I encourage everyone who has received their shot to continue protecting yourself and others. Wear a mask and wash your hands. I was made aware of an older couple who were, for the most part, completely isolated in a small town here in Alberta. They received their vaccines and decided that they could now venture out to do some of the things they used to do. They went shopping, donning a mask and did everything they were supposed to do, yet they still contracted the virus and are struggling to regain their health. So please take care of yourself and all those around you.

Many of us are still out in the workplace and we are seeing an upswing in business activity in some sectors, but if we do not take the recommended precautions to keep us all safe, we could be placing our health and others at risk, and in the end could create more dire consequences for our economy.

So please stay safe and abide by our current health regulations.

Message from the Executive Director
Well, we certainly live in interesting times! Just when COVID numbers were trending down along with hospitalizations, ICU patient numbers and the arrival of vaccines, a curve ball arrives in the new variants and numbers start to spike. In spite of the pathetic efforts of our federal government, Alberta is about 15% vaccinated and the arrival of new vaccines is supposed to spike. On the plus side, we are seeing positive numbers being forecast on economic growth. With the largesse of the federal government, Canadians have the highest level of savings in some time. Who thought paying 15- 17 year-olds living at home $10,000 in CERB was a good idea?
MEMBER MATTERS
Due to the current pandemic and gathering restrictions in place, the Alberta Metal Building Association has decided to move its 2021 AGM to an online format.

As the health and safety of our members is the highest priority, an online format provides a safe and convenient way to still hold speaker sessions and the annual general meeting of the association.
April 28, 2021 | 3:00 - 5:00 PM MST
Nomination Deadline: April 14, 2021
The Alberta Metal Building Association has established two awards for apprentices in the Metal Building System Erector trade.

The awards are in the amount of $750 each to be presented to two AMBA member apprentices at the AMBA Annual General Meeting each year.
Membership Committee
Spring has arrived in Alberta and we all look forward to new beginnings. At the time of this writing, I am pleased to say that virtually all of our current member companies have renewed their memberships in AMBA for 2021.

We are pleased to welcome another new member company since our last newsletter. Iron Sun Construction Ltd of Grande Prairie is our newest member company. Welcome to Adam Hutchison and Robert Bjornson of Iron Sun.

You will see in this edition of our newsletter both company and project profiles. These are a great way to gain exposure and show off a bit about the creative uses and features of Steel Building Systems. I would encourage all of our members to consider submitting project profiles for inclusion in future newsletters.

As always, if you are aware of anyone working in our Industry who you do not think is a member, please pass that information on to any of the Board members so that we can approach them about joining our Association.
For the past 50 years, Scott Builders has been busy building communities throughout Canada.

Formed in 1971 and acquired by Ralph Ward in 1986, Ward led the company to exponential growth. With three branches – Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton – the company is well positioned to provide province wide construction and has strong ties to local suppliers and sub-trades.
We would like to feature your company in our upcoming social media campaign featuring each of our members including a brief history of your company and your business values to help shed some light to the pre-engineered metal building industry in Alberta.

Please complete the survey below to participate. We look forward to hearing from you and sharing your story!

PROJECT PROFILES
Nu Edge Construction has built their success on a commitment to quality workmanship. When founder, Wayne Bowman, needed to expand his operation he looked to Butler and local contractor P. Hansen Construction for a building that would reflect the company’s dedication to excellence while providing lower total operating costs. Butler’s hot-box tested roof and wall systems significantly lowered Nu Edge’s monthly operating costs. For more information on how to better control your total cost of ownership visit www.butlermfg.com/why-butler/built-in-lifetime-savings.
INDUSTRY NEWS
Compositesworld.com indicated that North American glass fiber producers are struggling to keep up with consumption. With restricted travel and many working from home, increased sales of boats, RVs, swimming pools and hot tubs have increased the demand for continuous strand roving (Gun Rovings). The raw materials used to produce Gun Rovings are also used in the production of fiberglass insulation.
Look no further than your local building supply store and you will see what has happened with the cost of construction supplies. In the past year, everything from insulation, electrical, plumbing, drywall, wood and steel had whopping price increases. Some lumber prices have more than doubled, stimulated by strong residential construction, low interest rates and COVID induced mill capacity limits.

The Advantages of Metal Building Systems
Metal building systems are ideal for remote locations because they arrive in a complete package — columns, rafters, building shell, roof systems, and wall systems are all included. And only one crew is needed to erect the building. Learn more in our article, “The Advantages of Metal Building Systems from Clark Builders”.
What happens when metal building insulation (MBI) becomes wet? This is a question that gets asked very frequently, and in most cases, the next question is, “Does the insulation need to be replaced?” The most common response to the original and follow-up question is, “It depends.”
