AMBA Winter 2021 Update
WINTER 2021 NEWSLETTER
Message from the Chairman of the Board
Well, it’s a new year with the possibility of overcoming this pandemic and being able to travel and resume business as normal. I hope all of you had a safe and happy holiday and let us look forward to a prosperous and healthy new year.

The stock market has remained fairly steady; however, domestic oil production and pricing will remain volatile and we are going to be hit with an excessive carbon tax from our friends in Ottawa. That all being said, I have always believed that there is a silver lining in every cloud and this year it is vaccines! With immunization comes hope and a return to normalcy.

We normally hold our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in February. Due to the pandemic, the board agreed to delay the AGM. The annual golf tournament is currently scheduled for June, but as a precautionary measure, we are also booking a spot in the fall just in case we need to endure restrictions for a little longer.

At our next board meeting, on March 2, we will revisit the timeline for both the AGM and golf course and there will be further announcements in our next Newsletter and on our Website.

Message from the Executive Director
Happy New Year to all! I am quite certain most of us are quite happy to see the end of 2020. A year that has seen the spread of the COVID-19 worldwide and the devastating effects that have come with it. Over 1,000 Albertans have lost their lives and countless others are suffering from the consequences of the virus. On a positive note, the global medical community rallied to provide us with vaccines in an unprecedentedly short time! Help is on the way.

The Canadian energy sector is looking to increase its expenditures in Canada by over $2 billion. Oil pricing is forecasted to rise to the $60 barrel range. Lumber prices are very high, and our agricultural industry had a very strong harvest this past fall. All of these scenarios should contribute to an increase in activity in the construction industry. There are still billions of dollars in unspent infrastructure funds that need to be spent on capital projects across Canada. Private capital reserves are at an all-time high. We may not see the level of past Alberta boom times, but we do have reason to be optimistic for the year ahead.

Stay safe!
Roger Geisinger, Executive Director, AMBA
MEMBER MATTERS
Well, that year is finally over! 2020 certainly was a different kind of year, as we all had to deal with the challenges of managing a global pandemic. It is interesting to note, that when a group of people bonded by a common cause, act together for the collective good, what seem like insurmountable odds can be overcome. While we are starting to see improvements and with the rollout of the vaccines, there are still hurdles that lie ahead.
WHAT'S NEW
Available in two distinctive panel profiles, the Butler® EX Wall System delivers exceptional energy performance while also providing an architecturally pleasing exterior. The Butlerib II EX™ and Shadowall EX™ Wall Systems address the demands of new energy codes while offering a cost-competitive option to Insulated Metal Panels (IMPs). The EX Wall Systems helps you save on your building’s heating and cooling costs without sacrificing quality.
Dec. 18, 2020 – Distribution International, Inc. (DI) today announced the acquisition of Total-R Inc., Western Canada’s largest metal building insulation (MBI) laminator and the only MBI laminator physically located in Western Canada.

Total-R’s operations are being combined with DI’s Silvercote business, the North American MBI lamination and distribution industry leader with a network of 14 branches across the U.S. and Canada.
PROJECT PROFILES
In collaboration with Stantec, Clark Builders supplied and installed this 83,700 sf Behlen building for the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The structure included Lafarge pre-cast wall panels and a Metl Span roof and wall panel system – built to endure the most rugged requirements. The structure has the capacity to house 80 buses to serve the community.

For more information on this project, reach out to Clark Builders.
Small, free-standing retail stores are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of an engineered steel building solution. But Lewis Semashkewich of Melewka Structures & Design in Athabasca, Alberta thought the combination of the flexibility and quality of a Butler building, along with a design/build approach, would win the day for Great Canadian Oil Change/Valvoline. Two years ago, Lewis approached Great Canadian with an offer to adapt their wood-frame prototype to Butler systems. The result was a 1640 square foot structure with an MR-24 roof using the TLS insulation system. The roof had parapets and an internal gutter system.  The walls were insulated metal panels (IMP).
INDUSTRY NEWS
Happy New Year! I am sure many of us are relieved to see the end of 2020. The past year has been plagued by a pandemic with just under 2 million lives lost around the globe, social isolation, global trade disruptions, record fiscal and monetary stimulus programs, historic unemployment, economic collapse, and a tumultuous US election. Could it have been much worse? It is easy to get lost in the dismay; however, out of the doom and gloom, there is opportunity and hope. Never in history has the world united to tackle something so devastating that could threaten our very existence.
Pre-engineered Metal Buildings (PEMB) must be erected by certified Ironworkers or Metal Building System Erectors (MBSE) in the Province of Alberta.

When it comes to providing proper training and certification for the installation of PEMB, Alberta is leading the way. Improved quality, efficient construction, and enhanced safety are the leading reasons why this certification is mandatory.
In early 2020 most business leaders probably didn’t think a pandemic would shake the foundations of the world economy. In fact, the continued threat of diminished skilled labor and the related, detrimental impact to productivity were the common industry challenges that most construction executives faced at the time.

Watching his sports teams this past year has offered me a new perspective on the importance of a High Performing Team (HPT). It has caused me to ask the question “Why is one team more successful than another, even when they both have the same opportunity for success?
