AMBA Newsletter: Spring 2018

Introducing the new AMBA E-Newsletter!
SPRING 2018 E-NEWSLETTER
CHAIRMAN'S NOTES
Our industry is in for a very interesting year in 2018. The volatility of the steel pricing could or will impact what we will be bidding on over the next while. With the US implementing dumping charges and the steel suppliers experiencing shortages, we will be in for a roller coaster ride. As in the past it will soften over time but we need to be diligent in how we react to all of the different reports we will be seeing

TEMPORARY BRACING FOR METAL BUILDINGS
Have you ever seen a new-born foal crumple back to the ground after it has first stood? Its gangly legs go in all directions while it falls awkwardly, slowly and finally plops onto the ground. That’s kind of what the collapse of a metal building under construction is like, except it’s neither cute nor funny, but frightening and dangerous.
BILL 17: THE FAIR AND FAMILY-FRIENDLY WORKPLACES ACT
Workplaces have evolved since the Labour Relations Code was last updated in 1988.

Since that time, Supreme Court of Canada decisions have enshrined the rights of Canadians to unionize and collectively bargain as Charter-protected rights.

It is incumbent on our government to ensure our laws are kept up to date.

Following a focused review of the Code that included 340 written submissions from business, industry, organized labour, non-profits and the general public, as well as technical advice from respected labour lawyer and former Labour Relations Board Chairperson, Andrew Sims, Q.C., a series of changes to the Code have been passed as part of Bill 17: The Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act.
TIGHT TRUCKING MARKET HAS RETAILERS, MANUFACTURERS PAYING STEEP PRICES
Retailers and manufacturers grappling with an unusually tight trucking market are paying the steepest prices in years to keep their goods moving.

Freight demand had been ticking up for months, closely tracking the strengthening U.S. economy. The market got a boost from retailers needing to restock stores and distribution centers amid the biggest jump in holiday sales since 2011. That wave of demand hit the trucking market just as a new federal safety rule kicked in, leading some drivers to idle their big rigs.
TRADE DEFINITIONS PROMOTIONAL VIDEO
The ACA and the ECA along with our Alberta local construction association partners are pleased to present this video to members. This video complements the 2016 Trade Definitions, and offers further insight into the Definitions and their usage.

ACA Chairman Paul Verhesen and a number of others were interviewed for the video which explains the benefits of Trade Definitions. Our hope is that the Trade Definitions will continue to be adopted by the Industry, and we encourage our members to both view and share the video amongst their networks.
