Changes to Alberta's Ironworker Apprenticeship Programs

Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) would like to inform you about important dates and information regarding changes to the ironworker apprenticeship programs.

Ironworker Apprenticeship Programs

Effective December 5, 2019, on-the-job training hours are increasing in the ironworker programs. This means that apprentices who register on or after December 5, 2019, will need 1,620 on-the-job training hours for each period.

Increasing hours as part of the national apprenticeship harmonization plan makes it easier for apprentices to move throughout Canada and enables employers to access a greater pool of apprentices from other jurisdictions.

Apprentices registered in any ironworker apprentice program BEFORE December 5, 2019, will not have their hours increased and will have until August 31, 2023, to complete their apprenticeship program under the previous hours. If they become canceled and do not contact AIT within 30 days of the cancellation date, they may have to re-register into one of the three ironworker apprenticeship programs and complete 1,620 hours per period.

Once they have successfully completed an ironworker program, they are able to apply for previous credits from any common period(s) of training towards an additional journeyperson certificate in the ironworker trade.

Complete program details about the change in hours are available here.
